* Durga Puja :
Durga Puja is a ten-day event, of which the last five days involve certain rituals and practices. The festival begins with Mahalaya which is believed to mark the start of Durga’s journey to her natal home. Primary celebrations begin on the sixth day (Shasthi), on which the goddess is welcomed with rituals. The festival ends on the tenth day (Vijaya Dashami), when devotees embark on a procession carrying the worshipped clay sculpture-idols to a river, or other water body, and immerse them, symbolic of her return to the divine cosmos and her marital home with Shiva in Kailash.The festival marks the victory of goddess Durga in her battle against the shape-shifting asura, Mahishasura.
During the festival of Durga Puja, nine unmarried virgin girls up to the age of nine years are worshipped and fed as they are considered to be the incarnations of these nine goddesses.
*The nine forms:
1.Shailaputri – “Daughter of Mountain (ॐ देवी शैलपुत्र्यै नमः)
2.Brahmacharini – “Mother of devotion and penance (ॐ देवी ब्रह्मचारिण्यै नम:)
3.Chandraghanta – “Destroyer of demons” (ॐ देवी चंद्रघण्टायै नम:)
4.Kushmanda – “Goddess of The Cosmic Egg” (ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं कूष्मांडायै नम:)
5.Skandamata – “Goddess of motherhood and children” (ॐ देवी स्कन्दमातायै नम:)
6.Katyayani – “Goddess of Power” (ॐ देवी कात्यायन्यै नम:)
7.Kalaratri – “Goddess of Auspiciousness and Courage” (ॐ देवी कालरात्र्यै नम:)
8.Mahagauri – “Goddess of Beauty and Women” (ॐ देवी महागौर्यै नम:)
9.Siddhidhatri – “Goddess of Supernatural Powers or Siddhis” (ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं सिद्धिदात्यै नम:)
